SHILLONG: Chokpot in South Garo Hills is without supply of drinking water since April 2014. Taking note of the situation, the GSU has written to the PHE department to look into the issue at the earliest.
Addressing a letter to Parliamentary Secretary PHE Noverfield R. Marak, GSU president Tengsak G. Momin said the members had toured Chokpot sub-division and found that there was no drinkable water in rural as well as urban areas for over two years now.
“We had complained to the department but officials there told us that there was no fund to maintain or repair the existing worn-out steel water pipes. It is surprising that none of MLAs and MDCs, both former and present, of the constituency ever brought this to the notice of the government,” said Momin.
“Crores of rupees are sanctioned for water supply (projects) under NLCPR, funded by DONER, Centrally-sponsored Accelerated Urban Water Supply Programme and the Prime Minister’s Gramadoya Yojana. The PHE at Chokpot just need to maintain the pipelines to secure water supply,” said Momin. The GSU also stated that there was no water treatment plant at Baghmara.
