SHILLONG: Adopting a more professional approach, the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) on Wednesday distributed uniforms to 400 field workers including sweepers and drivers of garbage vehicles thus bringing in a dress code in an attempt to make the work more systematic.
The uniforms were purchased with fund amounting to Rs 4.8 lakh, sanctioned under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2015-16, informed SMB CEO BS Sohliya. Materials like glow jackets/vests, caps and shorts were distributed by Urban Affairs Minister Ronnie Lyngdoh here on Wednesday.
The SMB also felicitated two sweepers and two lorry attendants, three drivers and three labourers for their outstanding service. The workers were given prize money and certificates.
Speaking on the occasion, Lyngdoh said that there was a strong need to ban plastics which are non-biodegradable in nature and main reason for the filth around.
The dress code will be different for various categories of workers. While 50 SMB supervisors were given navy blue shirts, 1500 glow jackets were distributed to the field workers.
