SHILLONG: The charges into the sensational rape and murder case of a 19-year-old girl at 4 1/2 Mile in Upper Shillong was framed by the city court on Friday even as the government appointed public prosecutor I.C Jha as the special public prosecutor to conduct the case by replacing W.H.D Syngkon who is unwell.
The girl was allegedly raped and murdered in March this year by one Vicky Syiemlieh.
An official source said on Friday that charges were framed by the court of additional deputy commissioner (Judicial) E. Kharmnuid against the accused under IPC sections 302 (murder), 376 (rape) and 201 (destruction of evidence ).
The source added that the next course is to take evidence which will begin on October 14. As many as 39 witnesses will be examined. The accused is still in judicial custody and his bail applications were rejected by the court at least four times.
Earlier in June, the police had submitted the charge-sheet before the city court.
The girl went missing on March 17 evening from her house in Upper Shillong and the family launched a manhunt. She was later found inside a jungle close to her residence in the wee hours on March 18. She had multiple injuries and was shifted to the Civil Hospital where she was declared brought dead.
Soon after the incident, the mother of the accused handed over her son to the police after he confessed his involvement in the crime to her.
