SHILLONG/ JOWAI: The District Legal Services Authority, East Khasi Hills on Saturday celebrated the International Day of Older Persons at Mercy Home run by the Sisters of Charity situated in the city.
A medial camp was organized on the occasion. SP City Vivek Syiem, Government pleader IC Jha and others also spoke on the occasion.
Meanwhile the day was celebrated here in Jowai at Dulong Community Hall on Friday, on the theme ‘Take a stand against ageism’.
The event was organized by the office of the District Social Welfare, West Jaintia. The office had invited elders from various churches to attend the function.
In her introductory speech, the District Social Welfare Officer, ZJ Lyngdoh, briefed about the different schemes initiated by the government for its senior citizens.
Additional Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills District, SC Laloo who was the chief guest said, “Being a matrilineal society, we should always lead an example to different parts of the country by continuing to care and love our aged parents, grandparents at home and other senior citizens in our society”. “We need to always respect, love and show our care and appreciation towards our parents and grandparents as we too will have to go through the same phase and yearn for the same love and respects from others”, he added.
He also distributed gifts to all the 64 senior citizen participants.
Other who spoke on the occasion were Sein Raij Jowai, President, O.R Chalam, Pastor in- charge Jowai Presbyterian Church, Jowai, Rev. E. Nongpluh.
Free medical check-up was also conducted and the medical teams had conducted free blood test, blood sugar test and blood pressure test.
The program was chaired by Co-ordinator Breakthrough Centre, Jowai, L.Garod.
