SHILLONG: A delegation of the Nong Iew Association (NIA) on Friday apprised KHADC CEM PN Syiem of the anomalies prevailing at Iewduh market. In this connection, Syiem told reporters that a joint inspection cum meeting will be conducted in the area on October 11.
The delegation demanded that illegal settlement in the area should be dealt with and a resolution should be adopted to rid the traditional market place of the serious issues it is facing currently including indiscriminate dumping of garbage, protruding pipelines and improper drainage system.
“Illegal settling has been the contributing factor towards uncleanliness, moreover Iewduh has no proper toilets,” Syiem said.
“The shopkeepers informed me that they have to pay a weekly fee of Rs 20 set aside for cleaning the market which generates over Rs 5-6 lakh monthly,” he said while lamenting that the generation of the fund has not been able to make any change in the market area as far as cleanliness is concerned.
“The KHADC will allocate funds from the Special Assistance Scheme sanctioned by the Central Government in cleaning the market by repairing the protruding pipelines and maintaining a proper drainage system,” he said.
Meanwhile, the NIA president NIA claimed that there are more than 200 illegal settlers at Iewduh and they are to be blamed for the increasing robbery and unhygienic conditions in the market.
The association criticized the Hima Mylliem for its apathy in addressing the problem.
