SHILLONG: Donkupar Sumer, the Executive Member (EM) in charge of taxation of KHADC, admitted on Monday that there was misappropriation of funds in the District Council.
Council CEM P.N Syiem had asked Sumer to collect details from the Nongstoin and Nongpoh branches of Meghalaya Rural Bank.
Addressing reporters after the meeting of the People’s Democratic Front on Monday, Sumer said, “I have directed them (the banks) to provide personal details and account numbers of those involved to find out the person behind the fraud.”
Sumer said KHADC would collect all information within a weeks’ time. The KHADC took the step after there were allegations that fund of over Rs 2 crore was diverted to personal bank accounts. Refusing to disclose further information, Syiem said, “We will collect, compile and then decide action against those involved. In this case, we need to understand the genuine and non-genuine payments.”
However, he was quick to defend fellow MDCs and said none among the MDCs was involved in the scam.
Meanwhile, on a query about the expenditure incurred during the Monolith Festival, Syiem clarified that Rs 5 crore was not spent on the festival but for renovating the heritage village.
