SHILLONG: The conglomeration of NGOs in Garo Hills, which has decided to voice its protest over the death of a teenager at Rishipara last week by calling a shutdown of local shops on Wednesday, may be in trouble for violating the High Court order banning strikes in the State.
Tura police took suo moto cognizance of the move and the West Garo Hills deputy commissioner filed an FIR against the NGOs a day before the shutdown.
“As the call for closure (of shops) is in violation of the order passed by the High Court and also violates the order under Section 144 of the CrPC passed by the District Magistrate, the FIR was lodged by the DC,” the deputy secretary in the Political Department said.
DC Pravin Bakshi convened a meeting in Tura on Tuesday to sensitise all stakeholders and assure business establishments and civil societies about the High Court order and steps taken for the safety and security of the people there.
Notices have been served to all shops and establishments to remain open on Wednesday.
The deputy secretary in the Political Department said elaborate arrangements have been made by the district administration and the police to ensure law and order. Sources in the government said magistrates and police teams will cover sensitive locations through videography.
Meanwhile, a magisterial inquiry is already underway to probe all aspects of the case and police have also instituted a departmental inquiry headed by an additional SP-level officer. Social media contents are being monitored and people are advised not to spread rumours.
Police control room numbers have been activated to assist the public. The Tura police control room numbers are: 8730065429, 9855142486, 9436967547 and 9089398451.
