TURA: South Tura MLA John Leslee K Sangma has strongly condemned BSF for allegedly risking the lives of children participating in a Vacation Bible Camp by conducting an exercise at its firing range located below the programme venue at Balsrigittim locality of the town.
In his complaint to the West Garo Hills deputy commissioner, Sangma termed the incident as ‘reckless’ and said the BSF was indifferent to the safety of civilians, especially the young participants in the Bible Camp.
The incident took place around 9:30 am on October 15 despite camp organisers informing the BSF about the programme. “According to the organisers, the BSF was informed about the programme. That the BSF went ahead with the firing exercise despite prior information shows how the BSF authorities have no regard or concern for the safety of the children,” Sangma said.
The MLA also lambasted the State government for failing to shift the firing range from the civilian area despite the issue being raised twice in the House.
“I am utterly disappointed with the State government that has failed to address the issue. It is the failure of the former Home minister and the government in general even after assurances,” Sangma said.
Sangma, while demanding a magisterial inquiry has informed that a video recording of the whole incident was available that could be collected from him by the magistrate assigned for the purpose.
