JOWAI: The Dollois under the banner of Ka Dorbar ki Dolloi Ri Jaintia Hills have decided to temporarily suspend the customary tax collection at all exit points.
The decision was taken during the meeting of the dollois held here on Monday which was attended by 11 of the 17 dollois.
The meeting was called to discuss the suspension of seven dollois and removal of three acting dollois by the JHADC, besides deliberating on the customary tax collection through toll gates at the exit points on the National Highway.
The acting dolloi of Jowai Elaka, Puramon Kynjing, submitted a letter to the JHADC Chief withdrawing his support to the customary tax collection.
He refused to sign a joint representation stating that the ‘dollois of Ri Jaintia’ have never collected toll/tax from any commercial vehicles but the “customary tax” was being collected from vehicles ferrying the produce in areas under the dolloiship (Elaka).
“We have never violated any instructions passed by the JHADC,” the letter stated.
Kynjing also expressed gratitude to the JHADC for indicating willingness to invite them for a discussion on the matter.
Meanwhile, along with the acting dolloi of Jowai, dolloi of Nongtalang Chui Polynjar also withdrew support to the customary tax collection. This was confirmed by the JHADC during a meeting with media persons here.
