Spurt in cases of rape in State

SHILLONG: At least four cases of rape and attempt of sexual harassment were reported in the city and Jowai in the last one week.
A 40-year-old man was arrested on Monday for raping his 13-year-old step-daughter in a Ri Bhoi village.  Police said Arjun Diya raped the teenager on the night October 23 at Mawdem village in the district. Meanwhile, two incidents of attempted rape were reported on October 19 and October 23.  A complaint was lodged on October 19 accusing one Batchan Momin of trying to rape a 17-year-old girl at Mangsang in East Garo Hills.
In another incident, a woman lodged a complaint on October 23 accusing a 38-year-old man of attempting to rape her. Police said the accused, Chandra Momin, tried to rape her around 4pm on October 23 in her house.
Our Jowai correspondent adds that one Shilas Sten of Mukroh village was arrested in a rape case. Police said the accused had earlier committed various crimes and on Monday he appeared before Nartiang police outpost. Sten allegedly raped a girl in his village and police arrested him from Nartiang even before he could secure pre-arrest bail.
