EKH SP calls for coordinated effort to handle traffic

SHILLONG: With the perennial problem of congestion on city roads getting worse by the day, the East Khasi Hills police has stressed on the need for other departments to get involved in traffic management.
East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang said police are doing everything possible to regulate the flow of traffic but its management in the true sense requires involvement of all the line departments and stakeholders. “Leaving traffic management to the Shillong Traffic Police alone is asking a bit too much from them,” Kharkrang said.
Replying to a query, Kharkrang said road expansion is a part of effective traffic management but there are other factors which contribute to traffic snarls. “Hardware shops are coming up everywhere and people loading and unloading goods outside the stores is another major cause of congestion,” the EKH SP added.  On overtaking vehicles, Kharkrang said over the years people have realised that such careless act only adds to the congestion and is a futile exercise.
“The Shillong Traffic police has always taken strict action against vehicles which overtake,” he added.
