SHILLONG: It was an evening of storytelling, dancing and a play par excellence on Saturday at the Kiddies Corner Secondary School. This surprise package was lined up for parents and guests for the past three days. KC has always lived up to its reputation of choreographing some of the best plays over the years under the able guidance of Principal, Brian Wahlang. This time the junior school kids staged a play based on Bible stories which choreographed by Jerry Nongrum one of the oldest teachers of the school.

Then came the middle school and this was show that superseded all expectations. Bollywood dance numbers from the 60’s to the latest ones from films like Slumdog Millionaire to ABCD (Any Body Can Dance) kept the audience tapping their feet as the students gyrated to “Ao twist Karen,” and ,“Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar ke charche har zawan par,” amongst other Hindi songs. The senior school students staged a play – Electric Café – a science fiction story where aliens come to earth to find a suitor for their daughter. The performance of some of the students was as professional as it can get. The songs were out of this world and the background music superb. Addressing the audience at the end of the concert, Brian Wahlang said it took the students just a fortnight to practice. He attributed the success of the concert to the effort put in by parents, teachers, past pupils, friends of KC and collaborators, which he said was phenomenal. From putting up the stage to choreography, make- up and tailoring, it was a huge collaborative effort.

About 15 students are from Thailand, Brian informed and their parents contributed to the costumes needed for the Electric Café. The make-up for the artistes was done by past pupils and the lighting effect provided by Edward Mukhim The team gave a surreal effect to the Sci-fi concert. As can be expected, Barry Khonglah provided an excellent sound system. In all it was an evening well spent for parents and invitees.
Surprise guests at the KC concert included the British Deputy High Commissioner, Bruce Bucknell and wife Harriet both of who felt it was an evening well spent. Bucknell is in Shillong for an official visit.
