SHILLONG: UDP leader Bindo Lanong on Saturday compared the ‘wishful thinking’ of State Congress leaders, that the party would emerge victorious in the 2018 Assembly polls, to that of former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s who faced defeat in the last election.
“Gogoi had expressed confidence ahead of the last Assembly elections in Assam that the Congress would form the next government, but in vain,” Lanong said.
Recently, MPCC president D.D Lapang had said the Congress would emerge as the single largest party in the 2018 Assembly polls downplaying any threat to the party’s prospects following the suspension of Congress leader and KHADC CEM P.N. Syiem.
Former chief minister S.C. Marak also said that only people can give the verdict on the performance of the party and the government in 2018.
Lanong, meanwhile, did not find it surprising that the Congress was following in the footsteps of Gogoi who met his waterloo. “People in Meghalaya are aware of the political situation concerning the Congress. Will the people commit the mistake of installing the same government in 2018,” Lanong asked. On the pre-poll alliance with like-minded parties, the UDP leader said the goal is to fight together to defeat the Congress and added that the issue of pre-poll understanding among the non-Congress parties will be addressed at the right time.
