Health dept working on third phase impelmentation, says govt

SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Monday criticised the State Government for its failure to continue the much publicised Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS).
The statement came from the UDP as the policy period of Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) Phase II ended on Monday.
UDP working president Jemino Mawthoh said the party was disappointed for it was still not known how much time the government will take to start Phase III of the scheme.
The UDP leader said the scheme should have been continued without a break as thousands from the economically backward section of the society would be adversely affected.
“It has to continue or else the marginalised section of the society will be adversely affected,” Mawthoh said.
According to Mawthoh, the Government should have taken all possible steps before the end of the policy period to ensure that there was no discontinuity. “Hospitals are also concerned over the discontinuation of the scheme,” the UDP leader added.
Asserting that health is a priority sector, he asked the State government to expedite the whole process of continuing with the scheme.
On the other hand, a statement issued by the government said the Health Department is already working on implementing the third phase with an aim to include more benefits under the scheme. “It will be informed when the registration of households under MHIS Phase III begins,” the statement added.
The MHIS was launched by the State Government wit an aim to bring much needed relief to thousands of economically backward citizens of the State who cannot afford expensive medical treatment.
