Mentally unstable woman raped, accused roams free

A 32-year-old mentally unstable woman was raped by one Mestondar K Hari of Mawkohphet on October 2. An FIR in this regard was filed by the victim’s father only on October 19 as the matter was first taken up with the village heads. According to the FIR, on October 5 the accused visited the victim’s house to reach a compromise. CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said that till date the accused Hari has not been arrested and he suspects that he has secured an anticipatory bail. “On further inquiry the CSWO found that the same person had raped another woman back in 2011,” Kharshiing said.

Meghalaya calendar, diaries to get new look

Meghalaya calendar and Meghalaya diaries are set to get a new look. This was informed by Information & Public Relations (IPR), Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh who met reporters after a review meeting with IPR and IT department. “With regard to the Meghalaya calendar, we will look at not just the beauty of the place but what Meghalaya can sell to the rest of the country. We have a team of content writers and layout designers who will work closely with us. Wherever the calendar goes, it should carry a piece of Meghalaya,” she added.

Four convicted for ‘driving dangerously’

A local court here has convicted as many as four people in separate cases of violation of Motor Vehicles Act. On October 25 one Jobkupar Wahlang was arrested and booked U/S 184/185 Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. A non FIR case was registered against him in Lumdiengjri Traffic Branch and forwarded to the Court of L. Kharshiing, Judicial Magistrate First Class, Shillong Court. The Court in its order convicted Wahlang for driving dangerously and a fine of Rs.1000 was imposed upon him. On the same day, one Sibu Swargiary was also convicted by the same court for driving dangerously. In addition, two other persons identified as Robert Lamlasuong Singson and Richir C. Marak were also convicted for driving dangerously and a fine of Rs.1000 were imposed upon them.

Natl disaster reduction day observed

The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), South West Khasi Hills District, Mawkyrwat observed the National Disaster Reduction Day on October 29 at the Multipurpose hall DC’s office, Mawkyrwat on the theme ‘Preparedness can save precious lives’. The inaugural function was attended by the Deputy Commissioner, South West Khasi Hills District, R Lyngdoh in the presence of senior government officials and students of the District.

Wall painting competition

The Pyndengrei Social & Cultural Sports Club along with the office of the Deputy Commissioner West Khasi Hills will organize a wall painting competition on November 3 on the theme, ‘Public participation in promoting integrity and eradicating corruption’. The competition is open to all where cash prize of 10,000 will be awarded to the winner, 5000 and 3000 as 2nd and 3rd prize respectively. The organizer also informed that the competition will start at 9am till 3pm around the town wall. Participants can send their name and contact number latest by November 2 and there will be no TA/DA. The participants are required to bring their own materials.

RTI week celebrated in Garo Hills

A day long RTI Week celebration was organized by the Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute, in collaboration with the District Administration, Tura on Tuesday at District Auditorium, West Garo Hills Tura. The programme aims to improve the transparency and accountability in all departments through effective implementation of RTI Act 2005.

Enrolment drive held in GH I

In order to ensure that no eligible person is left out from getting the benefit of the Chief Minister’s Social Assistance Scheme for the infirm, single mothers and persons with disablities, a massive enrollment drive for beneficiaries of Betasing and Zikzak C&RD blocks under South West Garo Hills district was held at Ampati on Tuesday.

Elderly lady killed

An elderly lady succumbed to her injuries after she was knocked down by a two-wheeler here on Monday night. Police said that the incident happened around 9.30 pm when one motorcycle ridden by Bikram Thapa (35) knocked down Zongchi (65 yrs) at Polo. The victim was removed to Civil Hospital, Shillong where she succumbed to her injuries.

Debate competition held

As part of the Vigilance Awareness Week, the Power System Operation Corporation Limited (POSOCO) organised an open debate competition in collaboration with Martin Luther Christian University on Tuesday. The debate competition was bagged by Shillong Commerce College. The second prize went to the Department of Counselling Psychology, MLCU and third prize to Computer Science, MLCU.
