SHILLONG: The two-lane Jowai bypass is nearly complete and will open next month. PWD (Roads) Minister M.M Danggo inspected the road on Thursday and was happy with the progress. The bitumen coating of the road is still going on and traffic markings and signboards are yet to be put up. The Rs 46.61-crore project, which was taken up under the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for Development of Road Network in the North East, will help in reducing traffic congestion in Jowai. The 8km bypass will be a boon for those travelling to neighbouring states as they do not have to take a detour of Jowai town.
The bypass starts from 54.3km of NH 44 (E) near Thadlaskein and ends at 69.2km near Sixth Mile on the outskirts of Jowai.
