SHILLONG: The Joint Action Committee of All Teachers’ Associations of Meghalaya (JACATAM) has expressed concerns over the Centre’s ‘no detention policy’ in schools as it feels it is “unfavourable” for students here.
JACATAM general secretary Kenneth Shadap has urged the State government to hold talks with the Centre on the policy.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday during the JACATAM meeting at Youth Hostel, he said, “No detention policy will spoil the lives of students here.”
The policy states that students up to Class VIII should be promoted even without a passing grade.
However, the Centre of late is mulling the idea of scrapping the rule.
Meanwhile, the meeting, which was attended by 300 teachers of primary and upper primary ad hoc schools in Khasi and Jaintia Hills under the banner of JACATAM, also discussed its members’ meeting with the Commissioner and Secretary of Education, D.P Wahlang, recently.
The teachers were informed that a proposal for enhancement has been made with effect from September 1, 2016, and that a social security scheme for ad hoc schools is being examined by the Education Department even as he urged the JACATAM members to give their suggestions.
Shadap said JACATAM would follow up on the matter to push for enhancement for lower primary and upper primary ad hoc teachers by December this year.
“The problems faced by Hindi teachers and their salary enhancement will also be addressed,” he added.
