Wants probe into MeECL’s Rs 708-cr debt
SHILLONG: The Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) has demanded a CBI inquiry into the electrocution deaths of 6 people at Lyngiong, Mawphlang and the Rs 707.76 crore it owes to various companies from which it is purchasing power.
Speaking to reporters, BJYM president Egenstar Kurkalang said, “We are not satisfied with the decision of the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma to conduct a safety audit of all the transmission and distribution lines across the state but he should constitute CBI enquiry in both the cases.”
“The state has many resources and hydro power projects and it is disgraceful that MeECL owes a huge amount to the various companies,” he added.
“Moreover, the electricity bills are very high. Based on this, we cannot accept the load shedding which is a common phenomenon now,” he added.
When asked whether the amount of Rs 6 lakhs is sufficient for the victim’s kin, he replied in the negative and added, “The government’s 2012 notification has to be reviewed. It is different in 2012 and now in 2016. They should be given a compensation of at least Rs 10 lakhs.”
“The government should review its policies as there should be provisions for the eldest child of the deceased to get employment,” he added.
The demands by the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha were made to the corporation after six people in Lyngiong, Mawphlang have recently died as a result of electrocution in the state.
