SHILLONG: Along with the rest of the country Children’s Day was celebrated at Raj Bhavan here on Monday. Governor V Shanmuganathan welcomed students from various schools of East Khasi Hills to the historic Raj Bhavan on the occasion.
Also present were Rophul Marak, Parliamentary Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, P B O Warjri, Chief Information Commissioner, D P Wahlang, Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, P S Dkhar, Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, H M Shangpliang, Secretary to the Governor among others.
Addressing students, the Governor said that Children’s Day, celebrated on the birth anniversary of the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, reflects the “deep love Chacha Nehru had for children”. He also appealed to parents and teachers present to strive to be role models to their wards.
The Governor also urged the parents and teachers to give time, care, love and affection to their children so as to ensure that they grow up to be responsible citizens.
Songs and dances presented by the students of K J P Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Sein Jaintia Secondary School, Garo Union Secondary School, and a one-act play performed by ICCR and Department of Arts & Culture, Government of Meghalaya were some of the other highlights of the celebration.
Later, Shanmuganathan distributed trophies and certificates to the winners of the different schools who participated in the Raj Bhavan sprint meet, painting competition, essay competition and extempore competition which was held from October 25-27. The celebration was organized by the Raj Bhavan in collaboration with the East Khasi Hills District Administration.
Meanwhile, social organization SPARK also organized a special programme for the underprivileged and deprived children on the occasion.  Children from Anjali, Mawlong, Pongkung, Mawynrei and Rangmen were taken to Don Bosco Mawlai Museum for an exposure visit. Thereafter, the children visited Lady Hydari Park where games and other recreational activities were conducted.
The Rotary Club of Shillong also took part in the programme at Lady Hydari Park.
