SHILLONG: The body of a middle-aged woman, who was allegedly murdered, was found near Umiam Lake early on Monday morning.
Police said the body was found lying by the roadside at Mawiongrim in Ryndangbriew. This is the fifth such case of crime against women in the city this year.
East Khasi Hills SP M. Kharkrang confirmed that the woman was murdered and “from the crime scene, it seems that the victim was thrown from a vehicle”.
The police are still waiting for the postmortem report to ascertain whether the woman was raped.
The body has been sent to NEIGRIHMS for postmortem.
The police said the woman, who was aged between 30 and 35 years, was a tribal. She was wearing black jeans and a black sweater. They also found a gold earring. The body is yet to be identified.
The city and its outskirts have seen a series of similar incidents of crime against women since March this year when a 19-year-old girl from Upper Shillong was murdered. The body of a student of Hindu Mission was recovered soon after from Umiam.
Later in July, the body of a 16-year-old girl from Umlyngka was recovered from Damsite in Umiam. In September, another body, this time of a girl from Lumparing, was found.
In June, the body of another 18-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped and murdered, was found from Mawsaw, South West Khasi Hills.
