SHILLONG:The Reserve Bank of India on Tuesday dismissed reports of ‘fake’ Rs 10 coins in the market.
Sources in the central bank said the coins are genuine and there is no reason for the public to panic.
“The cost of manufacturing a Rs 10 coin is around Rs 20 to Rs 30. Counterfeiters will not produce such coins as they will run into losses,” the sources said.
“People should be aware that there is a difference in the appearance of the coins. Coins minted at Kolkata RBI will be different from the one minted at RBI’s Mumbai office,” the source said.
Meanwhile, a government official said no official complaint has been received on the circulation of the “fake coins”.
“If people have any doubt, they should go to the bank to seek clarification on whether the Rs 10 coin is fake,” the government official said. The official also urged people not to believe in rumours or spread any.
On the other hand, a senior official of the State of Bank of India (SBI) also stated that there is no information about circulation of ‘fake’ coins and if any such development is reported, RBI would alert banks in this regard.
“We have not received any direction from RBI,” the senior SBI official said.
It may be mentioned that many shops in the city are refusing to accept the Rs 10 coins fearing that it is not genuine.
