MAWKYRWAT: The failure of the PWD (Roads) to blacktop the road from Mawkyrwat to Marshilong village in South West Khasi Hills compelled the village authority and the Owners and Drivers Association of Marshilong to undertake the repair work on their own on Saturday.
President of the Owners and Drivers Association of Marshilong village Phroster Lyngkhoi informed that the 1 km road from Mawkyrwat to Marshilong was taken up for construction in 2003 but no follow up was made by the PWD to repair or blacktop the road. “The failure of the PWD (Roads) to blacktop this road has brought innumerable miseries to the people of the village especially because it is the only road connected directly with Mawkyrwat, headquarter of the district,” Lyngkhoi said. Due to heavy rainfall, the road now has completely eroded compelling the residents to undertake its repair. “This is not the first time that the people of Marshilong are repairing this road. Every year we have to repair the road as it ceases to be motorable after summer,” Marshilong headman G. Thongni said.
He also informed that the village authority and the association have met the engineer of PWD Roads, Mawkyrwat Division several times but to no avail.
