Attacks Basaiawmoit over MUDA, marriage act

SHILLONG: The UDP launched an attack on sitting legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit as it kick-started its KHADC bye-election campaign at Nongkrem on Monday. The regional party also urged residents to ensure victory of its candidate HS Shylla.
Hundreds gathered for the UDP Nongkrem circle’s election meeting held at Smit ground. The speakers at the meeting took a dig at local MLA Basaiawmoit on issues like Compulsory Registration of Marriage, MUDA and others.
Stating that he has already prepared five points for discussion in a pamphlet, Shylla said, “The people of the constituency are tired of the harassment by Ardent as seen in the cases of MUDA and marriage registration.”
Slamming the HSPDP MLA’s support to MUDA’s expansion to rural areas, Shylla said, “If MUDA’s jurisdiction is extended to our villages, a time will come when there will be no headmen and we will be controlled by ward commissioners.” He added that voting for ‘the Hand’ (Congress) or ‘the Lion’ (HSPDP), would mean that people have accepted the MUDA’s expansion plans.
Shylla also criticized Basaiawmoit on the marriage registration act issue which he observed would trouble newly weds.
Meanwhile, likening the HSPDP MLA to a jeep and the party’s by-poll candidate from Nongkrem Hubert Riang, to a trailer, UDP president Donkupar Roy said, “It is useless to take only the trailer as it depends on the jeep. It is pointless to elect the trailer as it is understood that the jeep cannot enter the District Council doors anymore. The public should not waste time but choose Shylla,” he said.
