SHILLONG/NONGSTOIN: Six candidates from different parties filed their nominations on Tuesday for the district council by-polls on December 13.
UDP’s HS Shylla and his rival candidate from the Congress Lamborsing Nongrum filed their nominations from Nongkrem constituency. The filing of nominations started on Monday.
Shylla said he is contesting the polls against extension of the building bye laws, issue of headman, extension of Article 371 (A) and (G) in Meghalaya and compulsory registration under the new Marriage Act.
“We are not against the Registration of Marriage Act but we are against the penalty clause that is too harsh and it should be made people-friendly,” he said, adding that he would also contest the election on the issue of the Khasi Lineage Act 1977.
“If people accept HSPDP and Congress, they will be supporting all these issues,” he said.
In Mawthadraishan constituency, Jambor War of UDP filed his nomination paper in presence of MLA Brolding Nongsiej and other party workers.
Independent candidate from Laban-Mawprem constituency Allowis Dohtdong and Wankupar Syiemlieh from Nongspung-Sohiong also filed their nominations at the DC office on Tuesday.
In West Khasi Hills, HSPDP candidate from Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency World Champion Paliar, a political greenhorn, filed his nomination paper before the assistant returning officer on Tuesday.
Paliar was accompanied by Rambrai MLA KP Pangniang and Nongstoin MLA D. Jyndiang, besides party workers.
Speaking to the media, Paliar expressed confidence that he will win the election by following in the footsteps of late Hopingstone Lyngdoh. He said he would bring unity among the Khasis and the Garos living in Rambrai-Jyrngam.
