TURA: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) and the Federation for A’chik Freedom (FAF), which were agitating against the alleged money laundering in the GHADC, called off their protest on its second day following appeals by the Council employees as two months’ pending salary was due to be released this week.
The organisations had called for a two-day protest. On the first day of the protest on Thursday, the agitators picketed the district council office that led to disruption of office work.
The protest had also halted the ongoing paperwork for the release of the pending salary of hundreds of GHADC employees. The salary was supposed to be released on Friday.
“We were preparing to release two months’ dues on Friday because the cheques for the same had already been prepared and were to be submitted to the bank on Thursday when the strike was called without any intimation. Salaries will now be cleared by the beginning of next week,” said CEM Denang T. Sangma.
He also expressed his gratitude to GSU and FAF for withdrawing the protest.
Both GSU and FAF have been demanding information about the central fund and details of the project implemented.
“We decided to call off the strike following a request from the council employees since they did not want it to affect the process currently underway for the release of their dues. However, we have not abandoned the issue and will pursue it later after we decide on the next course of action,” said a leader of the agitating group.
Earlier, representatives from the GSU and FAF called on the CEM to inform him about their decision. “Two leaders from the organizations met me and informed about the protest being called off and we are grateful for the wise decision. We also informed them that we are ready to sit across the table to address their grievances and in regards to queries relating to the central scheme, we are prepared to reply to the filing of any RTI,” said the CEM.
