SHILLONG: The shopping cum parking lot at Nongpoh which has 300 stalls is not finding many takers much to the concern of the State Government.
Speaking to The Shillong Times on Sunday, Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Chinmay Gotmare said that though some people have taken up shops in the market, very few are operating the same. Besides there have been instances where some shop owners have not paid the rent. “We may have to send notices to them,” he said.
He also said that the District Administration would hold a review meeting in December with municipal and other authorities to try and find out the reason for the poor response to the shopping complex built for the benefit of the public.
Admitting that there are minor infrastructural gaps in the market, Gotmare said that these will be taken care of.
The shopping cum parking lot which has 300 stalls and a parking apartment was constructed at the stretch of 4960 Sq.M at an estimated cost of Rs. 19.57 crore under the Central urban development scheme.
The project was constructed by NBCC and subsequently the Urban Affairs department handed over the complex to the Nongpoh Town Committee for maintenance and functioning. The shopping complex, which was inaugurated last year, was built to benefit shopkeepers affected by the four-laning project besides the unemployed youth of the district.
