TURA: The failure of GHADC members to support the motion moved by Tura MDC Rupert Sangma seeking the exclusion of non-tribals in the Council has not gone down well with the GSU chief executive committee that strongly condemned the different political parties.
The union questioned the lack of support from a regional party like the GNC, which in the past had raised its voice for the welfare of the A’chik people.
“In the past, the GNC used to take up various burning issues concerning the A’chik people. But now that it has its representation in the GHADC, the party has miserably failed to keep up to the expectations of the people,” it said.
GSU also condemned other A’chik MDCs, including those of the NPP, for failing to speak out in support of Sangma’s motion during the session and accused them of making false promises before elections.
“Before the elections, all party candidates as well as independents spoke of bringing change to the GHADC in the interests of the Garos. Now that they have been elected, we can see that they do not care for the people but only for the welfare of their own parties,” the union said.
On Tuesday, Rupert Sangma’s motion only got support from Bolsong MDC Jogonsing D Sangma and Siju MDC Kenadik S Marak. The GSU also put up posters condemning the lack of support to the Tura MDC’s motion in front of the GHADC Office.
Exclusion of non-tribals from the GHADC and its elections has been a long-standing demand of the GSU.
However, all attempts to get their demands fulfilled had failed as the GHADC, unlike the KHADC, is yet to frame a law to bar non-tribals from the Council.
