By-poll campaign kicks off at Rambrai

NONGSTOIN: Election fever gripped the people of Rambrai on Thursday when public meetings by four candidates contesting the Rambrai-Jyrngam seat were held at Rambrai market.
The BJP was the first to try and reach out to the public. Party candidate Dennestar Pariong along with BJP state president Shibun Lyngdoh and vice president Mahila Mandal Pelcy Snaitang took the centre stage.
Pariong said that the by-election is the first step as the BJP is eying majority seats in 2018 Assembly polls.
He claimed that the BJP has spread its wings in different parts of West and East Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi and Jaintia Hills.
Stating that the BJP was ready to eradicate corruption in the constituency, Pariong said that more than five PMGSY projects in Rambrai Jyrngam constituency are yet to be executed.
According to him, there is an advantage now since the BJP is ruling at the Centre and the party is keen to provide packages for the development of the area.
The Congress party which followed, held the election meeting in the absence of party candidate Kimfa Sidney Marbaniang. John Kharshiing who campaigned for the candidate said that Rambrai is waiting for change.
“The resignation of KP Pangniang as MDC will provide a chance for the Congress to emerge victorious” Kharshiing had said.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Donkupar Roy, and other party leaders including Jemino Mawthoh and Joe Marwein campaigned for UDP candidate Morning Tympuin.
Roy said that if the UDP candidate is elected, the party will support the CEM of KHADC P N Syiem so that he can complete his mission and agenda.
Tympuin spoke about the pending issues concerning MUDA, Marriage Act, and VAB.
He also slammed HSPDP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit for advocating article 371 A, by stating that Ardent wanted to do away with the district councils in the state.
During the campaign for HSPDP candidate World Champion Paliar, party president Basawiamoit clarified on all the allegations made by the UDP candidate and said that the accusations were intended to tarnish the image of the party.
He termed UDP’s Morning Tympuin as a person with little knowledge. “A person with little knowledge is very dangerous,” he added.
D. Jyndiang MLA of Nongstoin, K.P. Pangniang local MLA and Teilina Thangkhiew, MDC of Mylliem were also present.
