SHILLONG: Leader of Opposition and UDP president Donkupar Roy on Tuesday asserted that MLAs can contest the by-polls to the district councils since the post of MDC is not an “office of profit”.
Speaking to newsmen here, Roy asserted that the dual post Act of the ruling Congress is “ineffective”.
Referring to the Election Commission of India (ECI) pronouncement that MDC post is not an office of profit, he blamed the ruling Congress government for implementing an ineffective law that resulted in the resignation of seven MLAs that subsequently led to the by-election.
It may be mentioned that the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya) (Amendment) Act, 2015 was passed by the State government last year amid protest from opposition parties.
“Who is responsible? Of course not the people or political parties…it is the state government,” he said while recalling that the opposition parties had made efforts to request the MUA-II government not to take ant hasty decision.
