SHILLONG: The KHNAM on Friday criticised the district council members of the UDP and the HSPDP for resigning after the “toothless” dual posts act was passed by the Mukul Sangma-led government last year.
Addressing the media here on Friday, Pyndapborthiaw Saibon said KHNAM is contesting the by-election because the UDP and the HSPDP MDCs resigned.
“They resigned because they were afraid of Mukul Sangma’s dual posts act. It is a toothless act,” Saibon said and added that the council members “did not even understand that the Election Commission has clearly stated that the post of MDC is not an office of profit”.
Saibon pointed out that the regional parties lack unity owing to ideological differences.
Reacting to the UDP’s assertion  that its candidates are better than KHNAM, Saibon said the KHNAM candidates are working for the interest of the indigenous community and that it was the former’s ploy to claim that they would support KHADC chief executive member PN Syiem if they win the by-poll.
“They have three MDCs and if they win all, they will become nine and being the largest party in the KHADC, I don’t think they will support PN Syiem and it is just a ploy,” said Saibon, who was confident that KHNAM would win the three seats that it is contesting.
