Sputnik start Super Division campaign with win
Shillong: The Shillong Cricket league kickstarted on Monday with defending champions ,TNT Sputnik defeating Sumer CC by 41 runs in the first league match of the Super Division Shillong Cricket Tournament organised bythe Shillong Cricket Association at the SCA Cricket Ground, Polo. Electing to bat first, TNT Sputnik scored 174/9 in 40 overs. Amiangshu Sen scored 42 runs of 57 balls and Vishal Konwar 31 of 34 balls. For Sumer, Hiraj took 2 wickets for 34 runs and Salman 2 wickets for 38 runs. In reply, Sumer CC were bowled out for 134 runs in 29.5 overs. Subroto scored 27 of 37 balls and Hiraj 24 of 18 balls. For Sputnik, Aditya Singhania bowled a match winning spell and claimed five wickets for 25 runs. On Tuesday, Keating Road will play Youth Club  in  the First Division.

SSA Centenary Badminton Tournament concludes
Shillong: J. Joubieksang Hmar emerged winner defeating Johny F L Mawlong in the recently concluded Centenary Badminton Tournament of Shillong Sports Association . In the men’s doubles category, Eladmiki Suting and Gordon M. S. Rynjah won by defeating Aiborlang Ranee and J. Joubiaksang Hmar.

3rd Meghalaya State Archery C’ship ends in city
Shillong: Around 200 traditional archers along with 50 archers in modern archery participated in the 3rd Meghalaya State Archery Championship organised by the Archery Association of Meghalaya at J N Sports Complex in Polo.  Archers from East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, Ri – Bhoi and Garo Hills District took part in the event. The championship came to an end on December 10 in which Chiranjit Choudhury, General Secretary of Meghalaya State Olympic Association was the Chief Guest. Cash awards of Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 5,000 for 1st and 2nd position respectively and for the group Rs 20’000, Rs.10’000 for 1st and 2nd position respectively were given in traditional archery category.

Don Bosco felicitates medal winners

TURA: The Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Tura, felicitated three of its students who were part of a team that won medals during the 7th All Meghalaya Taekwondo Championships, 2016 held at U Tirot Sing Indoor Stadium in Shillong on December 4. During the tournament, Gamjang Bokjra Momin won a silver and bronze medal while two other students, Rikkamchuak Ch Marak and Dilsang Ch Marak won bronze medal each. The three successful students along with their coach were felicitated in the school by the Principal where he urged them to practice harder and become state and national champions. It may be mentioned that recently, ten students from the school made the school proud by bagging medals each at the All Assam Martial Arts Championships. During that time, two managed to win gold, five silver and three won bronze medals.

2nd Maitshaphrang Football tournament concludes

Nongpoh: The 2nd Maitshaphrang Football Tournament organised by the KSU 20 Mer Circle at the playground of Umling in Ri Bhoi District was concluded on Saturday where KSU Chief, Daniel Khyriem graced the closing ceremony as Chief Guest. The function was also attended by headman of Umling Augustine Wahlang, KSU NKHD President, Ferdynald Kharkamni besides other leaders of the Union including Lambokstar Marngar, Bansharai Warjri, Joseph Lambok Rymbai and others. The final match of the tourney was played between Kongripara FC against Niangbarilum Sports and Cultural Club. The game ended in a draw with one goal each during normal time. However, Kongripara FC emerged winner after defeating Niangbarilum SCC by 5 goals to 4 goals.

De Villiers steps down as South Africa’s Test captain
CAPE TOWN: AB de Villiers has resigned as South Africa’s Test captain, opening the way for childhood friend Faf du Plessis to take over on a permanent basis. De Villiers, 32, has been struggling with an elbow injury for six months and is out of the three-match home Test series against Sri Lanka that starts on December 26. “The interests of the team must always outweigh the interests of any individual including me,” he said in a Cricket South Africa news release on Monday. Barca to face PSG, Bayern to play Arsenal in last 16
Nyon (Switzerland): Bavarian football giants Bayern Munich will play Arsenal, while Barcelona will face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League last 16 round, according to the draw held on Monday. The Champions League defending champions Real Madrid will play Italian club Napoli, while reigning Serie A champions and 2014-15 runners-up Juventus will meet Portuguese side FC Porto, reports Efe. Last year’s runners-up Atletico Madrid will take German club Bayer Leverkusen, while Borussia Dortmund were drawn with Portuguese side Benfica. Pep Guardiola-coached Manchester City will face Monaco, while Leicester City will be up against Spanish outfit Sevilla, coached by Chilean Jorge Sampaoli. The first leg of the Last 16 round will be played on February 14, 15, 21 and 22, while the second leg will take place on March 7, 8, 14 and 15. (IANS)
