Guv calls for agri boost

NONGPOH: Governor V. Shanmuganathan on Thursday inaugurated the one-day conference on linking prospective food entrepreneurs with various government schemes and markets at ICAR Research Complex in Umiam.
Addressing the gathering at the programme organised by Assocham in collaboration with the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Shanmuganathan said, “Meghalaya is basically an agricultural state where most of the people depend entirely on agriculture for their livelihood. The State, compared to other parts of the country, is gifted with diverse agro-climatic conditions, fertile soil and abundance of water resources, which are suitable for cultivating various crops, fruits and vegetables.”
Emphasising on the importance of agriculture for the economic growth of the State, the Governor urged the scientists present at the programme to encourage farming by guiding the youth and holding awareness programmes.  A plenary session and house discussion was also conducted during the programme.
