SHILLONG: Khrang village in Mawkynrew block of East Khasi Hills, which continues to be in partial darkness, has a ray of hope with Art of Living launching ‘Light a Home’ project in the village recently. Under the ‘Light a Home’ project, the AoL reached out to the people of the village by distributing around 135 solar lamps. This initiative is a first of its kind in Meghalaya.
Increase in the number of rural households has not compelled the MeECL to better its service in Khrang.
Unable to pay huge amount of money to set up a transformer, several houses in the village continue to be in darkness.
According to local MLA Remington Pyngrope, though there are more than 300 houses, only a few have electricity connection. “I have raised this with the government several times but to no avail,” he said
“The villagers, who mainly depend on agriculture for their livelihood, cannot afford to pay for electricity connection from MeECL,” he said.
“I am happy that my friends from AoL have rendered help to my people who have been under darkness for the past several years,” the legislator said.
‘Light a Home’ initiative launched in October 2012 aims at bringing clean and affordable lighting to 360 million people in India living in 74 million rural households who do not have access to electricity.
