SHILLONG: Meghalaya DGP Swaraj Bir Singh, popularly known as SB Singh, was awarded this year’s Sahitya Akademi award for his play in Punjabi.
Singh (58), whose literary side is unknown to many in Meghalaya, won the prestigious award for his play Maseya Di Raat (Moonless Night) written in 2013.
An eminent Punjabi playwright, there are as many as 14 plays to his credit besides several anthologies. He began as a poet and went on to pen several plays.
“The play Maseya Di Raat centers around Punjabi women’s yearning for male child, which often results in a lot of female infanticides,” Singh, who has a medical background, said.
