SHILLONG: A youth programme at Assam Rifles Public School on December 25 has drawn flak from several quarters over the date of the event.
The event, which is organised by a youth body from Kolkata, will be attended by Union Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain, who will inaugurate the function, and MP Saugata Roy.
All government offices remain closed on Christmas, which is the biggest festival in Shillong.
The Central Calcutta Science and Cultural Organisation for Youth will organise a national integration and youth leadership camp in the school on Laitkor from December 25. The last day of the camp is December 31.
Director General Assam Rifles Lt Gen Shokin Chauhan will be the chief guest.
When contacted, Chief General Secretary of the Centre Nemal Chandra Pramanik said the members were not aware that Christmas is celebrated in a big way in Shillong since this is the first time they are organising a programme in the city.
“Had we known that Christmas is celebrated in a huge manner, we would have shifted the dates,” he said.
