Shot fired in the air to disperse mob

SHILLONG: A group of people blocked the road near Ranikor police station in South West Khasi Hills on the eve of Christmas that snowballed into another round of trouble and police had to fire a round in the air to disperse the mob, a delayed report said.
The incident occurred around 9.30pm on December 24. Two police personnel were in their vehicle to deliver food to the cops who were deputed at Gomaghat check post. On their way, they found a group of boys from Ranikor blocking the road. When asked not to create a ruckus, the group got into an altercation with the police.
The officer in charge of Ranikor police station rushed to the spot and found one Chegan D. Shira from among the group and the matter was settled amicably. The boy’s parents were also present there.
However, later Chegan’s mother alleged that her son was targeted by police.
Around 1.30 am, a group of people from the Garo community gathered in front of Ranikor police station and used invectives and assaulted an UB constable, Dhupsing Marwein, and a few battalion personnel.
As the situation went out of control, police had to fire one round in the air with a service pistol to disperse the crowd.
When contacted, the police said inquiry has been conducted into the incident and a report has been submitted to the DIG Eastern range. The police also said the situation became normal after the incident and no arrests were made though they have registered a case.
