SHILLONG: The Umsning New Bypass project is progressing smoothly and is likely to be complete ahead of its deadline next year.
An official with the implementing agency said earth cutting and fixing culverts are almost over. The agency is also confident that the bypass will be completed before the July 2017 deadline.
However, the National Highway Authority of India has not yet sanctioned the funds for repairing the existing road and temporary work has been taken up to fill up the potholes. But the road is still far from safe as hundreds of big trucks ply on the route.
A few years back, a truck had crashed on to an auto killing several people.
