TURA: Teachers working at the Mahendraganj Girls’ Secondary School in South West Garo Hills have complained against the School Managing Committee (SMC) for allegedly showing favouritism to a certain teacher as well as withholding a portion of the money meant for their salaries.
The school which has only eight sanctioned posts besides Science and Hindi grants of Rs 22,000/- and Rs 3500/- respectively is currently overstaffed with a total of 13 teachers. According to the teachers, a resolution has also been passed by the SMC to appoint two more teachers.
“The school gets a grant of Rs 1,85,500 per month for the 13 staff members. We already have two excess teachers. A total of only Rs 1,76,500 is distributed to the teachers and Rs 9000 is held by the SMC every month. This is illegal as it amounts to snatching away of our rights,” the teachers complained.
The teachers also alleged that the Hindi teacher who is entitled to a grant of only Rs 3500/- is being paid Rs 9400 by the SMC.
Earlier in an order issued on November 8, the then DSEO, S D Sangma while clearly stating that there was no scope for new appointments in the school had directed the SMC to fill up any vacant posts, created by retirement of a teacher, with one of the existing non-sanctioned teachers.
According to the teachers, while one teacher retired recently, another is due for retirement in February.
Another order was issued by current DSEO, P C Das on December 16 wherein he directed complete distribution of money to Ad hoc teachers without withholding any amount.
However, despite the two orders, the SMC is yet to change its ways and continues to hold money for the appointment of new teachers.
