Guv asks youth to help solve unemployment, farmers’ problems

National Youth Day celebrated across State

SHILLONG/NONGSTOIN: Governor V. Shanmuganathan on Thursday urged the youths in Meghalaya to take active part in solving some of the grave problems faced by the State.
Addressing the gathering at a programme in Raj Bhavan on the occasion of Swami Vivekananda’s 154th birth anniversary, which is celebrated as National Youth Day, the Governor said unemployment and lack of market for farm produce are two major problems in the State and youth should try to mitigate the problems.
He further urged the educated youths to come forward and help school dropouts and farmers, who find it difficult to get good prices for farm produces due to lack of market.
‘A Journey to Divinity’, a dance drama on Swami Vivekananda, was presented by the Department of Arts and Culture and ICCR. It was performed by Gitanjali Dance Academy. Students of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Centre presented a skit on Vivekananda. A fashion show showcasing the indigenous garments was also part of the programme.
Later, the Governor felicitated the youth icons like Andrea Tariang, R.Passah, Wansuk Myrthong, Marlangki Suting, Empower Warbah, Bonifast Khymdeit and Kitborlang Nongphlang. Prizes for the National Youth Day Run organised by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs were distributed. The under-18 winners in boys category were Marso Kyndait, Synsharlang Wahlang and Batsingstar Kharjarin. Those in the under-18 girls category were Pynhun Shulet, Aidaris Lyngkhoi and Evamerry Ramsiej.
Earlier in the day, a cake was cut to celebrate the day at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda cultural centre. Paul Lyngdoh was the chief guest at the function.
The ABVP Meghalaya unit also celebrated ‘National Youth Day’ coinciding with Swami Vivekananda’s 154th birth anniversary and urged the youth to fight for a drug free state.
The Shillong ABVP unit organized a blood donation camp and many members and public also donated blood.
Speaking in the occasion as chief guest Agnes Kharshiing, president CSWO enlighten the gathering about Swami who dedicated his life for rejuvenation of the country as he firmly believed that it is possible through unstinting efforts of youth.
As a mark of respect to youth icon of great country, the ABVP appealed students and youth of Meghalaya to fight for a drug free state. Darilin Tang, State Secretary ABVP Meghalaya spoke on the occasion among others.
In Nongstoin too, a National Youth Day Run was organised by the District Sport Officer on Thursday. The first and second prizes went to Khlainbor Khardum and Blanjune Kurbah in the men’s category. In the women’s category, Jidalin Tympuin and Pynhunlang Puwein bagged the first and second prizes. There were around 180 participants.
In Shillong, a programme was held at Don Bosco Youth Centre organised by the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society in collaboration with Shamakami, Lam Jingshai Project. Nongthymmai MLA Jemino Mawthoh graced the occasion as the chief guest.
