SHILLONG: United Democratic Party (UDP) working president Paul Lyngdoh has reiterated his demand to set up fast track courts in every district in view of the rising crime graph in the State.
Speaking to The Shillong Times on Friday, Lyngdoh said he had taken up the matter during the Assembly session in 2014 but the suggestion was turned down by the State Government.
“Had the State Government acted in 2014, the fast track courts would have ensured that the crime graph did not rise the way it has today,” Lyngdoh said, adding that it’s never too late and the Government should learn and keep its stand clear.
Reacting to a query about the trafficking incident in which Mawhati MLA Julius Dorphang is the main accused, Lyngdoh said he should have had behaved in a manner which is in accordance with ethics and the law of the land.
The UDP working president said “it is a big lesson for the electorate” and that “they should be guided by merit and character” of their representatives rather than “selling themselves to the highest bidder”.
When asked about the growing demand to remove Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh, the UDP leader said it would not have been necessary for everyone to raise the demand had the Home Minister considered that he was in a position which would lead to a perception that he would influence the investigation.
The trafficking of the minor girl has rocked the State and several people, including pimps and clients, have been arrested.
The Mawhati MLA is accused of raping the minor girl twice, once in a guest house in Motinagar and the second time in a resort in Umiam.
