SHILLONG: There is no end to the overcharging by taxis in parts of city with the police stating that the aggrieved persons should lodge complaints to the police.
A few aggrieved persons had written to the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner PS Dkhar end of last year. Deputy Commissioner had in turn sought the response from the East Khasi Hills SP M. Kharkrang.
As per the complaints from several quarters, for small distance, the local taxi drivers charge according to their whims and fancies. Moreover, the charge imposed on any passenger for booking the entire taxi is exorbitant thereby violating the rate chart prepared by the state government.
However, police said that on a number of occasions wide publicity was given informing the public that the affected passengers, who are over charged, can approach Police Control Room or any nearest police station/traffic branch giving the number of local taxis and details of the incident.
“However, till now only a few complaints have been reported and the erring taxi drivers were detained and fined as per MV Act”, a police official said.
