Shillong: A two-day Tysam festival started in South Garo Hills on Monday amidst pomp and gaiety and people from all over Garo Hills flocked to Simsang Beach in Baghmara to witness the grand inauguration.
MLA Samuel M. Sangma and South Garo Hills DC Rophul S. Marak were among other dignitaries who were present at the inaugural function.
‘Tysam’, an Atong word that literally means by the riverside, is an annual social and cultural extravaganza organised by the District Administration on the golden beaches of River Simsang.
Addressing the gathering on Monday, Marak stressed on some of the crucial issues that are prevalent in the district. “Promotion of tourism is a panacea for bringing development in the district,” he added. He also urged the leaders and citizens of the district to work hard in promoting the tourism sector.
The highlights of the day included Wangala and Ruga dances, flower show, beach soccer, beach volleyball, diving competition, boat race, basketball, inter-block Wangala dance, Ajea/Serejing competition, traditional attire show among others. Besides, the District industrial exhibition has also been inaugurated in the same venue with a good number of stalls from all over the Garo Hills.
