SHILLONG: The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Meghalaya have been functioning without a full time Director for the last three months.
After the tenure of the former director of the institute ended on October 31, Director of NIT, Manipur Sarungbam Birendra Singh was given additional charge of NIT Shillong as interim director.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development started the process of recruiting new directors at NIT Shillong. Although the process is coming to an end as the new full-fledged Director of the institute will be finalised shortly.
It is expected that it will take another month for the new director to take over the charge of the institute.
Sources informed that it is not only the NIT Shillong which is functioning sans a full-fledged but as many as twelve NITs in the country require full -fledged Director and the Ministry is in the process of fulfilling all the vacancies.
It is also learnt that the NIT Meghalaya does not have a full time registrar at the moment after the last term of the last Registrar ended about 6 months ago. The process of recruiting a new Registrar is also on the process and the finalisation of the candidate for the post is in final stages.
It may be mentioned that the permanent campus of NIT Shillong is coming up at Sohra and the institute is given five years time to develop its campus in the state where it is situated.
It is learnt that the permanent campus of the institute is coming up in a satisfactory manner and though institute was planning to start using the permanent campus in a phase wise from May-June this year but the idea was changed as the permanent campus is at Sohra which is at a total distance of around 55 kms from Shillong and it would create problem for students and faculties to travel every day. It is also said that the project is progressing well.
