SHILLONG: Sexual assault has become a common phenomenon in the State and the number of cases that is coming to light almost every day does not show people’s fear for the law.
At least four cases of rape and gang rape, involving women as well as minors, have been reported from different parts of the State.
In a case from Ri Bhoi, a 21-year-old girl was gang raped by three persons. In a complaint lodged on January 13, Lasting Markhap and his wife said an auto driver and his two accomplice gang raped their granddaughter at Nongtraw in Ri Bhoi.

In another incident, a 45-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted and raped by one Songing at Bilselgre in North Garo Hills. The incident happened on January 16 and she has filed a complaint on the day.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said on Wednesday the Government was committed to punishing all wrong-doers so that there is fear of law among people.
But rape cases are piling up till the Government lives up to the promise. In another incident in West Khasi Hills, a 13-year-old girl was raped twice by one Starius Iawphniaw.
In her complaint, the mother said on the night of January 8, Iawphniaw raped her daughter in her house at Mawsynrang village in West Khasi Hills.
The FIR also said on January 13 morning, the accused took the girl to his house at Mawsaw village (SWKH) where he again raped her.
In the South West Khasi Hills incident that was reported two months after the woman was raped, police have arrested the accused, Longborn Thongni. The woman was threatened with dire consequences after she was raped on November 19. The complaint was lodged on January 13.
