SHILLONG: The Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya has petitioned the Chief Minister over the rape of a minor girl by Mawhati MDC Julius Dorphang and appealed to the MLAs supporting the MUA Government to approach the Assembly Speaker with a request to suspend Dorphang from all the committees and the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, chairman of the council John F. Kharshiing termed the incident as a blot on the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo indigenous people saying the incident must be strongly condemned by all in a society where a legislator has indulged in an unspeakable crime and has also confessed to it. Dorphang is now booked under the POCSO Act.
Kharshiing said while quick steps have been taken to apprehend all those involved in the incident, he also appealed to the members of the Congress Legislature Party, including other constituents supporting the MUA, to take legal steps to approach the Speaker on this issue.
