Govt identifies land for National Games

SHILLONG: Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma on Saturday said that with the State gearing up to host the 2022 National Games, preparations have started in right earnest and land has been identified for the purpose of infrastructure development.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion of the Meghalaya Day in Tura, Sangma said land has been identified on the stretches between Shillong and Jowai and Rongram and Tura for development of facilities and necessary infrastructures for hosting the National Games.
The Minister also informed that district sports committees have been formed giving adequate budget allocation for improving and promoting sports in a big way.
Sangma also made a fervent appeal to all the misguided youths to give up their anti-social activities saying one cannot achieve one’s agenda by resorting to killing, kidnapping and extortions.
After successfully co-hosting the 12th South Asian Games with Assam last year, Meghalaya got the opportunity to hold the National Games 2022.
Till date, only two states in the North East have hosted the National Games – Manipur in 1999 and neighbouring state Assam in 2007.
