SHILLONG: The KHNAM youth wing has decried the disunity among people in the city when it comes to fighting against rising crime, including sexual abuse of women and children, in the State.
In a statement to the press, president of the youth wing Thomas Passah condemned the gang rape of the 10-year-old girl in South West Khasi Hills.
“From time to time agitations and programmes are organised and we see that there is no unity among the crowd. People do not venture out during rallies and demonstrations. The local population do not join hands to address the issue together. Polo Ground was packed on Meghalaya Day but when it comes to voicing protest against the rising crimes, nobody takes a step,” said Passah, adding that people express their concerns only on social media, at home or in office.
KHNAM also urged the State Government to look into the relevant issues.
Meanwhile, Commander Shangpliang of the Joint Action Committee of All Meghalaya Farmers’ Union, who is a resident of Mawkyrwat, has expressed concern over the gang rape of the minor by seven juveniles.
In a press release, Shangpliang said misuse of technology and substance abuse among youth may lead to anti-social behaviour, including rape. He has called upon parents and civil societies to work together against crime.
