SHILLONG: Swami Brahmadevanandaji Maharaj, former Secretary of Ramakrishna Mission, Shillong, died at 75 on January 29 at Belur Math (near Kolkata), the headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission. Born and brought up in Shillong, Swami Brahmadevananda joined the Ramakrishna order in Shillong in 1971.
Popularly known as Sadhu Maharaj, Swami Brahmadevananda was instrumental in providing a number of philanthropic activities for the people of Meghalaya. During his tenure as secretary of Ramakrishna Mission, Shillong, a new infrastructure was created to provide better medical care through Ramakrishna Mission Charitable Dispensary as well as hostel accommodation for tribal school students.
It was also during his tenure the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Centre, at Quinton Road, which provides educational services, was also started. Hundreds of rural children were adopted for providing daily nutritious food, medical care and health awareness.
As condolence messages are pouring in, Swami Achyuteshananda, the present Secretary of Ramakrishna Mission, Shillong, has informed that a special Puja, Memorial Meeting and Bhandara will be held at Ramakrishna Mission, Laitumkhrah premises, on 10 February 2017 at 11.00 amin order to pay homage to the memory of the revered Swami.
