Shops gutted in fire at Rongjeng market

TURA: A fire that broke out on Monday evening at Rongjeng market in East Garo Hills destroyed three major shops and threatened to engulf the entire market area but timely intervention by locals who used sand and water to douse the flames helped in containing the damage.
There are conflicting reports as to what caused the fire to break out with some locals claiming that burning of garbage next to a shop.
The fire quickly engulfed two departmental stores and a iron and steel hardware store destroying it completely before the blaze could be contained.
The destroyed shops is believed to be of several lakh rupees.
