SHILLONG: Two persons have been arrested for sexually assaulting two minor girls at Resubelpara in North Garo Hills.
The district police said the two persons have been identified as Nikan R Marak (35) and Danit Sangma (19). The duo sexually assaulted the teenagers, one 16 and the other 17 years of age, on January 22 in a commercial vehicle. However, both the accused persons were arrested on Tuesday.
Police said Marak was out on bail after he was arrested for having links with underground outfits.
Initially, the family of the victims was reluctant to file an FIR and the village authorities were trying to hush the matter. However, after a lot of persuasion, police were able to convince the family to file the FIR.
Both the accused were forwarded to court and police are still interrogating the duo.
In another incident, a 23-year-old woman and a six-year-old child were raped in two separate incidents in the State. 21-year-old Phidalis Lamare raped the 23-year-old woman at about 9 pm on January 29 at Ladsutnga in East Jaintia Hills. In yet another incident, on the night of January 27, one Rophikul Syiemlieh raped the minor at Khliehmawlieh village in West Khasi Hills.
